Our goal is to assist in the development of the spiritual, moral, intellectual, emotional, social, and physical aspect of each child, to help them learn and exhibit self-discipline, and to help them reach their fullest potential according to the example set by Jesus.

The St. Mary on the Hill curriculum is prescribed by the Office of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Savannah. Our textbooks, material, projects, and field trips supplement these guidelines. Second and third grade curriculum includes Religion, Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Specials.

RELIGION

The second grade’s focus is on the preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. There will be parent meetings, family prayer services, and a potluck supper. The second grade, We Believe-Jesus Shares God’s Life, covers sacramental preparation, the sacraments, the Trinity, prayer, the commandments, the church, the mass, the church year, Mary, and the saints.

The third grade’s, We Believe-We are the Church, covers the Trinity, the church, the apostles, the church year, the sacraments, miracles, parables, prayer, Mary, and the saints.

MATHEMATICS

Areas covered in the 2nd grade curriculum are single, double, and triple digit addition and subtraction, place value and number patterns to 100 and 1000, comparing and ordering numbers, money, time, graphing, probability, geometry, measurement, fractions, and multiplication.

Language Arts integrates reading, phonics, English, writing, spelling, and handwriting. The Scott Foresman Reading Street, Grammar and Writing Book, and Spelling Practice Book, the Bowmar Noble Handwriting book, and the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing coincide with the Diocesan guidelines. They stress reading strategies, reading skills, spoken and written language, the writing process, and mechanics and conventions at the appropriate grade levels.

The areas of study for the second grade are states of matter, the solar system, plants, animals, and weather. Field trips may include Phinizy Swamp, the Augusta Canal, Ruth Patrick Science Center, Spirit Creek, and Fort Discovery.

The areas of study for third grade include life cycle, geology, simple machines, and the solar system. Field trips may include Phinizy Swamp, the Augusta Canal, Sprit Creek, Fort Discovery, and the Ruth Patrick Science Center.

SOCIAL STUDIES

The second grade Social Studies focuses on community. Students learn about living, working, and the rules of community through their personal history, our school history, Augusta history, Georgia history, USA history and through study of the continents.
