Reading Specialist

St. Mary employs a full-time reading specialist who provides a number of services to the students, teachers, and parents of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic School.

These services include:
CONSULTATION WITH TEACHERS
  • Consultations with teachers provide opportunities to share techniques and ideas that benefit the entire class or specific individuals in a number of areas:
  • Implementation of classroom-wide and individual accommodations for students with learning differences
  • Strategies for teaching specific reading skills
  • Assistance in creating reading plans for small group instruction that match each student’s ability and learning style.
  • Progress monitoring methods and ways to utilize the data that is obtained
CONSULTATION WITH PARENTS
  • Consultations are encouraged and may provide parents with a number of “at-home” reading strategies intended to remediate, improve or enrich their student’s current reading ability.
ACADEMIC SCREENINGS
  • A referral process is in place at St. Mary for teachers and parents to request academic screenings in order to determine current levels of academic functioning and reading ability.
  • Using assessments such as The Woodcock-Johnson Diagnostic Reading Battery-3rd Ed., The Gray Oral Reading Test-4th Ed., The Diagnostic Achievement Battery-3rd Ed., various reading inventories and reading fluency assessments, the reading specialist is able to determine overall reading levels, specific strengths and weaknesses in the areas of basic reading, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and other academic areas such as math and written expression.

    RESOURCE READING INTERVENTION CLASSES
    • Students who require more intensive interventions are offered resource services (provided outside of the regular classroom during the school day) in a small group environment-typically a 5:1 student-teacher ratio.
    • Based on each student’s individual needs, instruction is provided in the areas of basic reading and word attack skills, spelling, and reading comprehension using research-based, intensive, multisensory reading intervention programs such as Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes®.
    • Progress monitoring is used to assess each student’s academic performance over time and evaluate the effectiveness of the instruction that is provided.

St. Mary on the Hill Catholic School is NOT a Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes Center nor is it affiliated with, endorsed, monitored, or sponsored by Lindamood-Bell, Nanci Bell, Phyllis Lindamood or Pat Lindamood. Lindamood-Bell—an international organization creating and implementing unique instructional methods and programs for quality intervention to advance language and literacy skills—in no way endorses or monitors the services provided by St. Mary on the Hill Catholic School.
